Nyumba Iitu

Julius Kang’ethe (also known as Bylaw) was born 5 decades ago and was brought up along the slopes of Mt. Kenya. He recorded his first album, on vinyl, in 1981 and later on recorded 2 more albums under different recording publishers.

In 1986 Bylaw began recording music under his own labels (Editions BYLAW Sounds and Coconut Records) and by 1988 he had recorded 9 albums. During this period he was very active in studio recordings and performing live concerts in different parts of Kenya.

Unfortunately in 1989 he fell ill suffering from a nervous disorder which forced him out of music. To date, Kang’ethe has recorded 8 albums and he hopes to record more although he still suffers from lack of coordination. In addition to his music career, Julius is a water color and oil creative art painter.

Bylaw is considered by his peers as one of the greatest performers of Kikuyu music and many of his fans think he is much older owing to the message of his songs. Julius Kang'ethe counts Joseph Kamaru, Bob Marley, Charley Pride and Skeeter Davis as having influenced his style of music.
