Music Piracy In Africa

By far the greatest limiting factor on the sales of music within Africa is piracy. There are some markets that, at a conservative estimate, are 50% pirate. Almost no country in Africa has a piracy level of less than 25%. And some estimates for West Africa suggest the piracy level is as much as much 85% to 90%.

Production and Management: What makes this situation even worse is the plethora of dishonest producers and corrupt or incompetent managers. Because there is no professional music business in most of Africa there are few professional managers. This can have an impact on an artist's career. Since artists don't make very much money from record sales they make most of their money from touring. And to tour, you have to have good artist managers and good tour managers.

The challenge is, working with local producers, local labels and local artists in Africa to try to establish a structure in which everyone, from record companies to artists, composers and authors receive due payment without stifling this enormously dynamic and very creative scene.

The dilemma: Currently there is an extensively emerging potential in contemporary genres of rap, kapuka, and genge in Kenya and replicated elsewhere in East Africa . Unfortunately, most of these talents are developing in a structural vacuum where the legal, financial and rights infrastructure are absent. Faced with rampant piracy, an underexposed production sector and a toothless legal and enforcement structure, these talents are doomed to failure.

Data: there is a chronic lack of data in the Music industry in the region and Africa by extension. The absence of data has hindered prospecting in music as an investment option for both local and foreign investors. Data relating to size of the industry, market potential, piracy levels, production capacities and distribution channels is does not exist. The free access regime of the industry has in most cases hampered investment. Few ad hoc and limited by scope studies have been conducted on a one-off basis targeted at a particular area of interest. These are hardly useful to an investor as they do not provide data on the past trends, current status or projections. It is therefore difficult for investors to commit funds in such uncertain scenarios.

Local, national and International Level Economic integration: The challenge is in the integration of music industry into the economic development policies and structures of African economies. This is especially important given that the upcoming contemporary musicians are mainly the youth between 19-35yrs, and who constitute the bulk of the unemployed. The new coalition government in Kenyan for example, has pledged half a million jobs a year. Faced with similar challenges, African countries need to cultivate the industry into a more lucrative sector that not only benefits the artists but also contributes to revenue generation in the form of taxes. This would easily be achieved through streamlining the music industry to create more opportunity for economic realisation among the varied stakeholders. An important question therefore, is ‘ can music be commercialised and developed into an engine for economic empowerment and development in Africa?'

An answer to question can be seen by example. When in the UK, almost surreally, a Heinz commercial was broadcast showing a very white English family sitting around the table having a meal to the sound of a Ladysmith Black Mambazo song. As result of that, Ladysmith Black Mambazo sold 800,000 units of the Best of album in the UK.

You Sing, We Sell

One of the most frequent question Derek Sivers, the founder of CD Baby, gets asked by musicians is �How much does the average artist sell on CD Baby?�

Many musicians try to figure out the answer by dividing the $85 million (Kshs 6 billion!!) he�s paid to artists for the 250,000 albums available on CD Baby. Which comes to around $340 per album over the span of 10 years that CD Baby has been in existence.

The problem is that the numbers are right but the answer is wrong because it groups together two completely different types of approaches to an album release, giving an inaccurate average.

For some independent artists, releasing an album is like the starting line in a race. The gun goes off! They work it! They spend hours a day pushing, promoting and selling. For the next few months, they never stop. Reaching new audiences by any means necessary.

For these artists, their average income from CD Baby is $5,000 (Kshs 350,000). In this group there are up to 50 artists who work harder and end up earning over $100,000 (Kshs 7,000,000).

But for the majority of independent artists, releasing an album is like the finish line in a race. They�ve always wanted to make a record. They did it. It�s done. They give some for free to friends and family, and glow in the compliments. They might do a few concerts and build a website, but in terms of effort, there is very little they can do.

We at KenTunes appreciate the fact that Kenyan musicians can�t reach out to the majority of Kenyans in the Diaspora. Even if they wanted, the task would be difficult and too expensive especially if they are based in Kenya.

Before we developed our website, we realized that Kenyan music is not reaching the majority of Kenyans in the Diaspora. For this reason we�ve put together a comprehensive marketing plan to reach out to Kenyans in the Diaspora. We understand that the fact that one�s album is available online in Itunes, Amazon or CD Baby does not mean that it is available to Kenyans in the Diaspora.

We�ve consulted widely with individuals in the U.S. media industry and researched extensively regarding the same before putting together our advertising strategy. We also believe that we are best positioned to sell Kenyan music through our branded website as we have access to the major markets in the West, financial resources and can leverage the economies of scale so that we can do so cheaply than if Kenyan musicians did so individually.

KenTunes realizes that reaching out to Kenyans in the Diaspora will be no easy task, but one thing you can be sure is that we will work hard to make it a reality.

Les Mangelepa Coming To KenTunes

Les Mangelepa, a corruption of French meaning Marching Time, began as an offshoot of the legendary Baba Gaston�s Baba Nacional band based in Lubumbashi, Zaire. After a tour of Zambia, some breakaway members traveled to Dar Es Salaam where they set up base in 1974. But their stay was short lived as the band, then comprising of Evanny Kabila Kabanze, Bwami Bwalumona, Kalenga Nzazi, Lutulu Kaniki, Tambwi Williams, Kasongo Fundi, Mukala Kanyinda Coco, Mukala Bebe and Lukangika Maindusa, had an eye on Nairobi�s thriving showbiz scene. So on July 1, 1976, they arrived in Nairobi to pitch tent at the Acquarius Club, effectively ending the Mangelepa�s long march from Shaba province.

Their style of Congolese Rumba quickly found ready fans long used to Ochieng Kabasseleh and Tabu Ley�s music, giving them a toe-hold on the nightlife. Throughout the 1980�s, Mangelepa confirmed their hold on the Kenyan and East African Music scene with such evalasting gems as Nyako Konya, Embakasi (both of which earned Golden discs), Dracula and Mimba, which won Silver status.

Among their most memorable albums include Kijana (1976), Mangelepa Kamili (1977), 1st Anniversary (1978), Walter (2nd anniversary) Aoko, Madina, Kambelembele and Holy Bible. Their Congolese contemporaries in East Africa include Orch Marquiz du Zaire, Super Mazembe and Orchestre Virunga, as well as native East Africa bands like Maroon Commandos and Les Wanyika. Their status as one of East Africa�s leading bands is defined by their legions of fans and strings of hits that still reign 30 years later.

The band is on the comeback after a decade and their Golden Voices double release album by SoundAfrica, and soon to be made available on KenTunes, signifies Mangelepa�s resolve to continue entertaining their fans with their unique Rumba style.

It's Not About Me

I woke up yesterday just after 8 o�clock to the noise of my sons getting ready for their Saturday morning swimming lessons. I couldn�t accompany my sons for their swimming lesson because when I am present, I distract them from listening to the instructors.

I had retired to bed at 2 am the previous night as I was busy going through the digitized music that I was preparing to upload to the website. And so I thought to myself that I will lie in bed and snooze rather than wake up. After all, I had a hectic week at work and I had also worked late throughout the week digitizing the music collection.

Just as I was about to snooze, it suddenly dawned on me that some musician in Kenya is counting on the launch and success of KenTunes. Like someone who had been struck by a bolt of lightening, I jumped off my bed and with a toothbrush in my mouth I headed to my home office.

During my recent visit to Kenya, I had the chance of meeting many talented musicians and producers. Even though the musicians were spread across several genres, there were two recurring themes in our discussions.

In our conversations, their passion for music was unmistakable. I remember the times I waited for some of them at their studios while they worked on their up coming releases. In some instances, they put in long hours even during the weekends.

Unfortunately, almost every one of them also spoke about the piracy of their music albums. They had toiled hard, sacrificing their time, energies and money, only for pirates to reap the benefits of their work. I did not realize how prevalent music piracy was until one of the musicians asked me for bus fare, to go back to their home after we had met in a restaurant in Nairobi.

In the hustle and bustle of life, it is easy to overlook the details and focus on the big picture. Yet it is the small things that we do that often have a big impact on other people�s lives.

Losing one hour of my snooze may be a small matter to me, but to one of the musician�s in Kenya it may mean going to bed without a meal. Delaying the launch of KenTunes by a week may be a matter of life and death to someone in Kenya.

KenTunes Goes Live

Nairobi, Kenya, Mar. 15, 2009 -- KenTunes, a new website created to help Kenyan musicians derive the financial benefit out of selling their music on the Internet, has just been launched.

In introducing the service, one of its founders, Kevin Muthuri, pointed out that the major existing music download services do not carry a wide selection of Kenyan music and are not accessible to most artists in Kenya.

"Our website allows artists to think global when it comes to selling their music," said Kevin. "Kenyan musicians can depend on us to deliver their locally available albums across geographical boundaries."

KenTunes concept is to provide artists with access to Kenyans living in the Diaspora in addition to promoting and marketing their albums overseas. Unlike most online music stores, artists can also track the sale of their albums downloaded through the website. Another unique feature is that artists receive proceeds from their sales locally - or as Kevin likes to say, "Musicians do not have to wait for payments from overseas or cash cheques drawn in foreign currency that take weeks to clear."

The idea for KenTunes grew out of the need for an exclusive and comprehensive online music store promoting Kenyan albums. Rather than Kenyan artists having to rely on the manufacture and shipment of their albums, they built a custom-made download store where fans can directly purchase and download Kenyan music.

Some of the artists available through KenTunes include, Kayamba Africa, Milele, Zannaziki, Joseph Kamaru, Bana Kadori, Maroon Commandos and K-South. The website, which has over 100 Kenyan albums, is expected to be a hit among Kenyans living in the Diaspora.

Happy Birthday Joseph Kamaru

If you've ever met Mr. Joseph Kamaru, you would have a hard time believing that he is 70 years old.

I had the pleasure of meeting him no less than 6 times during my last visit to Kenya. Locating him was not that hard. I first went to his music outlet in downtown Nairobi, and the shop assistant directed me to his Christ Campaigners Ministry offices where he spends most of his time when he is in the city.

It was only after I had left Kenya that I learnt he was in his late 60's. I hadn't thought about it before but if someone had asked me then, I would not have guessed that he is 70 years old. Not only does Joseph Kamaru look much younger and fitter, but he is also very sharp and jolly. And fact that he is one of the few musicians from �Riverwood� who agreed to sign up with KenTunes is a testament that he is a man who is ahead of his peers.

As he celebrates his 70th birthday on the 24th of March in Nairobi, we at KenTunes would like to wish him God's blessings in the coming year. For those in Kenya, you can join Joseph Kamaru in celebrating his 70^th birthday and 44 years as a musician at the yet-to-be finalized event scheduled to be held at the Carnivore.

Available on KenTunes, to Joseph Kamaru�s fans in the Diaspora, are the best of the many albums that the iconic musician has produced in the last 5 decades. Included in the 12 albums that he has released to KenTunes, is Kimirii which he produced in 2007.

Jimmie Gait Tops Kenyan Gospel Awards

The first time I heard of the Muhadhara song, as it commonly referred to, was when I was in Kenya earlier this year. I was at my folk�s place just lazily reading the dailies when the video played on the Television.

A week later, I was seated with James Matheremu, or Jimmie Gait as he is known, listening to his life story in a Nairobi Restaurant. As we chatted over breakfast, it became clear to me that here was a musician who was destined to greater things.

It is no wonder that he bagged the prestigious Song of the Year at Grove Awards held in Nairobi. Muhadhara, which means loss in sheng, is a gospel song about a broke young man who almost gained the whole world but almost lost his soul. The Kiswahili song depicts Jimmie�s luck when he met a sugar mummy who offered him a lot of money in return for his love. Like Joseph, son of Jacob, in the Old Testament, he resisted the lady's advances and chose to be faithful to the Lord. In return, his faithfulness is rewarded when his uncle who lives abroad send him money.

Although the soft spoken Jimmie Gait is popularly known for this one song, I have to add that his debut album does not disappoint. When I first listened to the songs, I found the songs to be easy to listen to and captivating.

The down side of the album is that it is one of the most popularly pirated albums in Kenya. By Jimmie�s estimation, close to half a million boot leg copies have been sold thereby depriving him of the money he could have earned from the album.

For those who have not had a chance to listen to Jimmie�s songs, the album is available for download on our website. I recommend this album for easy listening on a Sunday afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of life.

Should You Buy Single Tracks?

A friend called me today to ask whether they should buy a complete album or a few songs from one of the albums available on KenTunes. Having listened to all the albums available on KenTunes, I advised him against buying individual tracks.

Before I explain my answer, allow me to give you an analogy. When you watch a movie or read a novel, do you not watch the whole flick or read the complete novel?

And it is the same with music albums. To the artist, an album is like a story. No single track is complete on its own. It takes the whole album to tell the artist�s story.

If you like an artist, chances are that you will enjoy listening to the complete album. You may not like some of the songs from your favorite artist when you first listen to the album. But with time, I have noticed that I enjoy the rest of the songs later. In fact, some of the songs sound anew and much better with time.

The fastest way to get bored with music is to buy single hits. Unlike complete albums, you enjoy the song less with every subsequent play and get bored with the song after a short while and go looking for the next new hit in the market.

As it is with novels and movies, every song in an album is like a chapter. To get the most value for your money and the best listening experience, I would recommend buying complete albums rather than individual tracks.

Giving Thanks

Wow! What a journey it has been. It is now almost 18 months since the idea of a Kenyan only online store was conceived.

When we started this journey, little did I know that it would take this long. Although we knew what we wanted, but we did not have the faintest idea how to go about it.

What we thought would take no more than 9 months, ended up taking twice the amount of time. And were it not for the people who helped us along the way, we would never have gotten this website done.

Without naming names, I can't say how thankful I am for the support and encouragement that we have received from friends, new acquaintances and even strangers.

To the Kenyan musicians and their fans, this website is for you. We are humbled by the opportunity to serve as a link between the artists and the fans.

A Short History Of Mwomboko

In Kenya�s history, Mwomboko is one of the dances associated with the Mau Mau armed struggles against the colonial government in the pre-independence era.

The word Mwomboko is possibly a corruption of the Kiswahili word kaumbuka, which means lifting of the feet and the Gikuyu word kuomboka which means to dance and make merry.

Mwomboko is a genre which emerged between the late 1930�s and early 1940�s as a response to the emerging socio-cultural interferences resulting from the arrival of the white colonialists. The indigenous Africans felt threatened by the foreigners who promoted their own culture while castigating African culture.

Prior to Mwomboko, there was Muthirigu in the 1920�s. Muthirigu was a vigorous local social protest dance which embraced traditional African culture. The colonialists were irritated by this dance as it espoused female circumcision and banned the performance of Muthirigu around 1930.

This led to the emergence of Mwomboko as an avenue of both social and political protest.

Soldiers and carrier corps returning from World War I and II brought with them the accordion, which they tried to integrate as an accompaniment to the traditional-cum-modern dance Mwomboko. The fusion of a Scottish dance and indigenous African dance movement resulted in the vibrant Mwomboko dance.

Unhappy with the suppression, prejudices and exploitive nature of the colonialists, Mwomboko composers wrote allegorical poetry ostensibly revolving around love affairs. But on close examination, they were actually satires on the white man. To advance socio-political awareness to the populace, the song genre became a weapon to spread propaganda. The colonial powers later banned Mwomboko as it was attributed to the agents of agitation and aggression against the regime.

For a taste of Mwomboko, we have in store H.M. Kariuki�s Mwomboko Wa 1940�s Volumes 1 and 2. I have no doubt that clang of the karingaringa will no doubt reconnect listeners to their cultural roots.

Mary Njau�s Songs Of Praise

Born the sixth born in a family of six boys and four girls, Mary Njau�s passion for singing took root when she was a young girl in Sunday School. Mary, born to Bishop Johana Macharia and Julia Macharia, says that her passion to sing sing was stirred all the more by Julia Lucy, a popular Gospel singer and also by Mary Wambui of the � Ahadi Ya Bwana� fame.

In 1992, she conceived a vision for producing a cassette and in 1993 she started composing songs but it never worked out because she lacked the finances. In 2002 and 2003, she hoped to record her songs while visiting Kenya but she lost her voice on both occasions the moment she landed in Nairobi.

Believing in God, she never lost hope and it was only after she met Sarah Mbogo, another US based Kenyan singer, that she produced two gospel albums. Utheri Nimuku Thi (The Light Has Come To The World) and Jesu Niwanyendire (Jesus Loved Me), both produced in 2006, contain a collection of spiritual, scriptural and inspirational songs.

Jesu Niwanyendirespeaks of the love, mercies and faithfulness of God, and Mary�s desire to live for God under His will all the days of her life.

Her third album, Afrika, is my favorite album of the three. The Swahili gospel album was produced by legendary musician, Robert �RKay� Kamanzi in 2009. What makes it special for me is that I was present in the studio when she was recording the title track of this album.. he songs in her third speak directly about the various situations that have gripped Kenya during the last two year.

I have no doubt that Mary Njau�s three Gospel albums, now available at KenTunes, will be a blessing to gospel music fans.

Jimmy Wayuni's Benga Beats

If you like Benga music then Jimmy Walter Githinji, also popularly known as Jimmy Wa Eunice, is your type of musician. With 6 albums to his name, Jimmy Wayuni, has collaborated with some of the most famous names in the Kenyan music industry. Queen Jane, Peter Kigia, John De�Mathew and Mike Rua are some of the musicians he has worked with.

Jimmy Wayuni�s love for music dates back to his school days. He started to compose and even write songs as early as 1972. And with a good voice to boot, he participated in interclass music activities and even became a member of his local church choir.

But it was through his visits to Nairobi that he got to meet several already established and popular local musicians including the likes of C D M Kiratu, Daniel Kamau "DK", Joseph Kamaru Macharia, Wahome Maingi, Mwalimu James Mbugua, the late Joseph Gicheha and Lawrence Nduru - all by then very popular Kikuyu musicians.

By attending live shows and recording sessions, he gained a lot of experience even before he could record and produce his own music. With the assistance of C D M Kiratu, he polished his musical talent. But it was not until 1975 he formally joined the music industry.

His first vinyl (disc) recording was a simple Kikuyu language song named "Kairitu Roiko". The flip side was titled "Muka wa Mikora", which he released under his own label, Kuhurika Brothers Sounds.

Now working on his seventh album, Jimmy Wayuni has performed widely within and out of Kenya. His 6 albums are now exclusively available on KenTunes for download under the Benga music category.

Babu Kabaselleh Follows In His Father's Footsteps

One thing that I have realized about music is that you don�t have to understand the words to enjoy a good song. A good song will always stand out regardless what language the musician chooses to sing in.

A good example is Babu Kabaselleh�s Ogongo album. I know only a handful of Luo words but I can�t explain my liking for this album. Like many albums that I have come to like, I didn�t fully appreciate Ogongo the first time I listened to it. But come the second time and I was swept away by the soothing rhythms sung in a mixture of Dholuo, Lingala and Swahili. And it�s not just me who likes this album. I have noticed my 4 year old son is also captivated by the sounds of the guitar.

Each song seems to set the stage for the next one. As I listened to the album, I got the feeling that the songs were getting better. The album sounds like one long song especially because I can�t understand the words being sung.

The album which took five years to record is the second of Babu�s album and marks the 40^th anniversary of Lunna Kidi Band which was previously led by his father, the late Ochieng' Kabaselleh.

Listening to this album makes me understand why foreigners, some who have never been to Kenya, are buying Kenyan music.

Four quick months have gone by since we first launched the website. During this period, we have journeyed like a traveler heading to a far of place, an uncharted territory if you will. Like any other new business, we wondered if we were really going to make any sales or if anyone would be interested in Kenyan music.

It is with this in mind, that we would like to thank our customers, subscribers and also our web visitors. Going by the records, many of you have subscribed to our newsletter, others have registered user accounts, and others have gone a step further and bought music downloads. It is all these individuals that we would like to thank.

On behalf of the musicians, some whom have asked that I pass their heartfelt thanks, we are grateful for your patronage. Going by the comments I have received from the artists, they are encouraged that people who live in far away lands have purchased their music.

In the meantime, some of you may have noticed that we have been adding more albums to our store. These new additions include; Jimmy Wayuni, a popular Benga artist; the famed Ochieng Kabaselleh; Kayamba Fiesta; Mimi Asali; Vundumuna; Ochestre Les Volcano; Owacha Willy; Babu Kabaselleh, a scion of Kabaselleh; Annie Wa Arthur, whom I had the pleasure of meeting when she toured the U.S.; Antony Omondi Gitau, popularly known as Kamnao by his fans; Raul Umba and Bouger Musica; and finally, last but not least, Orchestra Continental.

In addition, we have signed up new artists, whose music we are preparing to upload and will be available in the coming weeks. We are also expecting more musicians, including some of the well known artists in Kenya , to join our catalog in the months to come.

As we head towards the second half of the year, we ask that you continue to journey with us and the Kenyan music fraternity, into a land that is full of song and dance. And to those who have bought the music, my hope is that you are enjoying the songs.

Introducing George Weya Josee

Among the many Benga musicians that I�ve had the pleasure of meeting is Joseph Weyally Nyayieka, better known to his fans as George Weya Josee. George Weya, a veteran Kenyan musician, first came into the limelight in 1988 with the chart bursting song Pamela and later Jumapili (Rossa). He went on to form the group Les Safari Band and recorded yet another Kiswahili hit song, Sussy Sussanna, in 1991.

George Weya, a soft spoken artist, performs in Dholuo, Kiswahili and English and his hits have won him many fans, both the young and the old. His songs are philosophical, mainly about the daily life issues, and also praises in favor of friends who have supported him in his musical endeavors.

The sixth child of the late Benard Peter Nyayieka and Domtila Aua was born in 1960, and started his music career in 1977 while still a student at St. Savio�s Secondary School in Nairobi. He initially performed in night clubs before turning to composing and recording his own music. His career has seen him perform with Ochestra Majaliwa, Zaiken Band, Festival Libuka, Du-Zaire of the late Bosho Kayembe, Bilongo Musica and Everest Kings Ochestre.

George Weya is currently a guitarist for Bana Kadori Masanga and also performs for his own band Ochestre Asante Africa Musica. His albums, Suzzy Sazzana, Jowema and Lando Pamela, are available for download in the Benga section.

Les Mangelepa's John Manga Comes Of Age

Listening to John Monga�s first solo album in ten years, it is easy to confuse his songs with those of Les Mangelepa or Super Mazembe. This is because he has been a core member of Orchestre Les Mangelepa and his album features Jean Cluade Kasongo wa Kanema of Super Mazembe among other band members from Les Mangelepa.

Born in 1974 in Kigoma, Tanzania, to Congolese parents, John Monga was destined for a music career at a very early age. He began singing with the Tanzania Assemblies of God in Mwanza, where he was based for ten years, releasing two gospel albums in that period. He then moved to Kenya and continued singing gospel in 1999 when he met and joined Ochestre Les Mangelepa at the Garden Square Restaurant in Nairobi.

Since then, he has been a core member of the band. Together they have performed and recorded their most recent releases � Mangelepa Millennium and Remix in 2000, and Golden Voices in 2007. A deft composer and solo guitarist, John Monga sometimes performs with Aziz Abdi�s Ngoma Afrika band.

Vituko, currently available in the Rumba category, is perhaps his last secular composition. This infectious piece of acoustic and vocal prowess has a lasting luster. It combines the best of Les Mangelepa�s well known lyrical strengths and the vocal flair that is Monga�s true identity as a composer and singer. Like other Les Mangelepa releases, this album is a timeless classic that represents East Africa�s music circa 2009.

2009 Kisima Music Awards Winners

The Kisima Music Awards, the Kenyan equivalent of the Grammys, finally took place last weekend in Nairobi. Only that this time around there is no mention of it in the mainstream media. I have no idea why but all doesn�t seem to be well because the event has been postponed several times and was last held in 2007.

Sammy Kasule's Unforgettable Hits

If you are looking for good Kenyan songs to play at a wedding then Sammy Kasule's hits will do. In particular, his Muziki album contains some of Kenya's best love songs. Starting with the award winning Kipenzi, where he reaffirms his love to his dearest, and then followed by Ndoa Ya Furaha which is a reflection of a good marriage. My favorite track is Ndoto which is a groovy song that should be a feature of every Kenyan wedding evening reception.

Born in Uganda, Samuel Kasule showed a canny interest in music at a very early age when he built his very first guitar out of wood and tins. However, his mother would hear none of it and smashed his first two home-made guitars. Sammy made a third one and which he hid in the bushes, and secretly played it whenever he was sent on an errand. In secondary school, he joined Katikamu Light College band beginning his lifelong career as a musician.

Sammy Kasule later dropped out of school and first joined Super Kaumba and Les Noirs in the 70�s. Owing to the political climate in his native country, Sammy fled Idi Amin�s reign of terror for Kenya where he established himself. During this period he played bass guitar for Vundumuna in addition to recording 2 albums. The self titled Kasule and Muziki, both which are available for download under the Zilizopendwa category.

Now living in Sweden since 1991, Sammy Kasule started a band named Makonde which he leads. He continues to compose, sing and also plays the bass guitar. The band is a rare mix of cultures consisting of musicians from several African countries and also some from Sweden.

Now finalizing on releasing his third album, Sammy has promised to avail the album once it is completed. And going by his first two albums, I look forward to listening to his new album for I have had his songs on heavy rotation in my mp3 player for the last couple of days.

Queen Mashie At Her Best

Sandra Mashiringo, who sings under the stage name Queen Mashie, is one of the newest artist in the Kenyan music scene. Born in Gutu, Zimbabwe, she started singing early in Class 4 as a member of her school choir but her progression was interrupted when she joined a high school that had no music teacher. Instead, she joined her local Catholic choir where she excelled and represented in music competitions.

After high school Sandra moved to the city of Harare to join her elder brother, Andy Brown, who was already an accomplished musician. It was him who convinced her to ditch computer studies for a career in music because he recognized her talent from hearing her singing around the house.

Sandra joined her brother in practice sessions and eventually got a role as a back-up vocalist for his band. For 5 years, she got the chance to tour and perform in several countries, singing alongside legendary artists like Oliver Mtukudzi. And in 2005, Queen Mashie was born when she decided to go solo and recorded her first album with Vintage Band at her brother�s studio.

Soon after she left for Nairobi and performed with several bands in Nairobi hotels. It was in Nairobi that Queen Mashie met Juma Tutu, who asked her to join his already established Tutu Band. It was during her stint with Tutu Band that she composed most of the songs for her album, Kare Kare (which means long time ago � it actually sounds like Kale Kale which means the same in Kiswahili).

Kare Kare comprises of her original Afro-Fusion compositions with a distinctly Zimbabwean (Chimurenga) feel fused with East African Benga that defines her musical, linguistic and cultural journey. In a time when Zimbabwe is coming out of its most depressed period, Queen Mashie�s music is a trail blazing and uplifting breath of fresh air in the tradition set by her internationally acclaimed predecessors and compatriots Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, Andy Brown and Chiwoniso.

The 2009 Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival

For those in Nairobi, or those who will be in Nairobi on the 12th of December, a group of Kenyan artists have put together The Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival�. This will be an annual festival showcase of the best, in music, dance, creative writing, spoken word and film from Kenya, Africa and the rest of the world.

The Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival takes name �Kinanda� from a Swahili word, used to refer to a small transistor radio and also that also refers the marimba (xylophone); it is a universal word that invokes joyous music performance.

The festival brings together some of the finest local and international talent in an event that is set to be the highlight of the Nairobi�s cultural calendar. The ethos of The Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival� is guided by the vision to be the premium source of an authentic, wholesome live entertainment (festival) experience in Nairobi.

Multi-Platinum selling and internationally acclaimed South African band, Freshly Ground will grace this year�s inaugural festival, on the Jamhuri Day Weekend i.e. 12th of December 2009. Celebrate Jamhuri Day With Maroon Commandos

During my last trip to Kenya, I was privileged to meet with Habel Kifoto, a veteran of the Kenyan Music industry and synonymous with the Maroon Commandos band. Now currently based in Mombasa, Habel Kifoto was in Nairobi and seeing that he is one of the legends of Kenyan music I did not want to pass the chance of meeting him in person.

His story goes back to October 1st 1970 when he founded the Maroon Commandos band of the 7th Kenya Rifles based at Gilgil barracks. An all-round musician, Kifoto played lead and solo guitars, the keyboard, the sax and sung on most of the band�s releases. Together with the late Laban Ochuka and David Kibe, Habel Kifoto composed most the band�s releases.

In the 32 years that he was with Maroon Commandos, Habel Kifoto was instrumental in grooming and recruiting other musicians into the band and he steered the band to remain the most consistent and decorated band. With several albums to their name, Maroon Commandos produced a host of songs that were the hallmark of the then Voice of Kenya, the national broadcaster. They were a common feature especially during public holidays when they performed during state functions.

Among their famed songs are classic hits such as Charonyi Ni Wasi, Cristina, Tucheze Sambale and Uvivu Mbaya, which can be found in the Habel Kifoto & Maroon Commandos Greatest Hits double album available on for download on our website. I have to add that Charonyi Ni Wasi, sand in Taita, is my favorite song.

Habel Kifoto retired on September 20, 2002, as a senior Sergent in the Kenyan Army, and he passed the mantle to a new crop of dedicated musicians led by Tuesday Oguro. He is now serving as the chairman of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya, and is actively involved in minding the welfare of Kenyan musicians.

As we remember Kenya�s independence from the British on the 12th of December, you can bring back the memories of past celebrations by listening to songs from Maroon Commandos. In addition to their Greatest Hits double compilation, we have in store 2 of their newest albums, namely; Shika Kamba and Kenya Unite.

Shika Kamba is a celebration of East African old school music. The album is a combination of the benga and Rumba styles that made Maroon Commandos a household name in Kenya. Over the last decade, Kenyans have witnessed the re-emergence of contemporary folk music which has been popularized by weddings and public functions.

My first encounter with contemporary Kenyan folk music was the all boy band acapella group, Kayamba Africa, at a friend�s wedding held more than a decade ago in Nairobi. I nostalgically remember when the Master-of-Ceremony called out the group to entertain the guests and the ensuing dancing that erupted once the group started belting out their traditional tunes.

In the years that followed, contemporary Kenyan folk music has grown by leaps and bounds. What started as the only acapella group has paved way for others to follow suit. In addition to the original Kayamba Africa, led by Juma Odemba and Moses Ekirapa, there is also Peter Ngeru's Kayamba Fiesta, Esmund Mukasya's Kayamba Roots among others that are also following up in their steps.

The beauty of it all is the diversity of their music. Although their mugithi and isikuti songs are more popularly known, the acapella groups have songs from almost every ethnic group in the country. Some of the songs like Sela, Werokamu, Zangalewa, Safari Ya Bamba and Nginyukagia are better known but among the less known tracks are also some of beautiful ethnic compositions. And you don't have to understand the words to enjoy the songs. In some cases, like Wakariru, Hombe and Boiboiyet, the rhythm and the beats are enough to get one going.

Between the 3 Kayamba groups, we carry 5 of their albums which reflect the diversity of the different ethnic cultures - with songs from Giriama, Kamba, Samburu, Kikuyu, Luo, Luhyia, Pokot, Kalejin, Waswahili, Kisii, Masai, Taita and Meru . Keep Fit With Kenyan Music

With time, I have slowly found out that one of the tangible benefits of having a collection of Kenyan music albums is that you can listen to the music while exercising. Personally, I think it makes it worthwhile to working out with music playing in the background. Be it from a stereo music player or from a personal mp3 player.

Depending on the work out and sometimes the mood, I will go through my selection and pick an album or two to exercise to. It is kind of like matching the music to the occasion. If one is cycling, you can choose a fast paced album to pace oneself. Usually, Contemporary Gospel or Urban music will be appropriate. On the other hand, one will find Zilizopendwa suitable for walks, especially in the evening with the sun setting over the horizon. If jogging or weight training, one can settle for a more upbeat album. This could be Soukous, Benga or even Rumba albums.

With the characteristic good Spring weather in the Northern hemisphere, this is the perfect time for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging or cycling. The Villagers Band Will Entertain You

Well, if you are wondering what village in Kenya The Villagers Band come from, then you�ll be left scratching your head after you listen to their songs. I can�t remember when I first heard of them, but my first encounter with The Villagers Band came by way of the AFYA ART TRIBE concert that was held at the Tribe Hotel in Nairobi in mid-May. Among the talented artists set to perform was the band, which got to play a number of their hit songs.

Established in 2005, the Nairobi based band comprises of 9 established musicians, including Qqu from the group NIX, and is led by the gifted sogwriter Chris Adwar. The band which is a common feature in the Narobi live music scene has a unique style of music dubbed Begenge - a unique Kenyan sound in which they mix indigenous African grooves and melodies from styles such as benga, makossa, lingala, kwela and mbalax with other forms of urban music found within Africa. Bengenge is coined from benga and genge styles of music, whereby � benga� represents all artistic and authentically African forms of music and � genge� represents everything pop and urban.

Of the 15 tracks from their second album, The Nofork Hotel (not to be confused with The Norfolk Hotel), it's impossible to say which of their songs is the best. With the first and last tracks being interludes, the rest are witty songs with amusing lyrics and a theme of both rural and urban love in today�s era of social networking and materialism. The songs also mirror people�s desires to live a better life and the lengths they go to try and achieve all of this. From the boy in �Country Girl�, �Mr. Walker�, �Damu Yangu�, �Dar es Salaam� who admires a girl from afar or the guy in � Nofork� who lies to his wife about where he goes to every morning or the girl in �Mercedes Benz� who wants to get with a celebrity.

One thing that I particularly like about their songs is that they are authentically Kenyan and they don't try to imitate foreign acts. From the way they sing, sometimes in a strong rural accent, to their beats, their originality clearly stands out. It is therefore not a surprise that I would strongly recommend this album without any reservations.

The Story Behind "Hakuna Matata" Phrase

One of the privileges of selling Kenyan music is that artists get to tell me their personal stories. I get to hear the stories behind their music or regarding the songs that they compose. One such interesting story is that of the well renowned phrase "Hakuna Matata" which has come to be associated with Walt Disney�s block buster film, The Lion King.

One evening in November 1979, Them Mushrooms band was playing at the Severin Sea Lodge in Mombasa. After their performance, Teddy Harrison Kalanda overhead a group of tourists at the pool bar joking around and trying to speak Kiswahili. �Jambo�, �Habari�, Mzuri sana�, they said to each other.

It was then that an idea struck him and he thought to himself to compose a fun song with the simplest Kiswahili words. He would then get the tourists to learn the language as they sang along whilst dancing to the music. And with that, the greatest Kiswahili phrase was born out of the song Kenya Hakuna Matata. Them Mushrooms thereafter went on to record this song on 21st February 1980 at the Polygram Studio in Nairobi.

As you can imagine, the song was an instant hit with tourists wherever Them Mushrooms played it. Soon all the other bands in Mombasa started to play it too as it seemed the tourists could not get enough of it. Kenya Hakuna Matata went Silver in 1982, then Gold in 1984 before peaking at Platinum in 1987.

To date there are over 15 cover versions of Kenya Hakuna Matata. These include renditions by Liza Shakir of Sudan, Shimelis Ararso of Ethipia, Adam Solomon of Canada, Samba Salad of Holland, Fausto Pred of Italy, Boney M of Germany, just to mention a few.

Unfortunately for Them Mushrooms, none of the credits to the song have been attributed to them although they came up with the phrase long before Lion King popularized it in 1994.

Super Mazembe Still Going Strong

Of all the Congolese bands that immigrated to East Africa, Super Mazembe, or Bana Mushosho as they were famously known, has an unmatched legacy of dance and style. Led by Longwa Didos, Super Mazembe started in 1969 in Likasi as Super Vox. While on tour to neighboring Zambia in 1979, the band met Nashil Pichen Kazembe, a diehard supporter of one of Zaire�s top soccer club, TP Mazembe, who impressed upon then to change their name from Vox to Mazembe (which means earth mover).

Kazembe subsequently became the bands producer and manager, and encouraged the band to move to Nairobi which had better recording facilities.

And so the band hit the road to Nairobi in 1974, through Tanzania, as many a Congolese band did back then. In Nairobi, their fortunes changed. While they entertained patrons at Club Madunis (today�s Florida Club) where they were based, they had their sights on recording more successful songs than they had hitherto done. In 1976, they signed up with EMI Record and released perhaps their greatest song to date -"Kasongo".

However, Super Mazembe�s ride to fame was interrupted when EMI closed shop in 1978. This also meant parting ways with their producer, Kanindo. They then moved to Al Records where they began to work with producer Felix Jakong�o for the next three years, but soon hit another obstacle when record sales slumped due to piracy. In 1982, Super Mazembe stopped recording altogether and concentrated on performing although they released a few songs such as Bana Likassy.

Little was heard of Super Mazembe thereafter until 2006 when Kasongo wa Kanema decided to revive the dream. "I did not want the band to die. Many people in their 30�s were asking for Mazembe songs and the music was not available on CD so we had to do something� says wa Kanema, who joined the band in 1978".

�The result was a modernized rearrangement of some of Super Mazembe�s greatest hits that sound just as fresh as when they were recorded 20 to 30 years ago".

This Greatest Hits Remix relives the days when Bana Mushosho ruled East Africa�s live band scene with their Belly-Bottom outfits, and it is also carefully arranged to meet the taste of the contemporary lover of Rumba.

The following terms and conditions apply to the KenTunes Kenya Music Week 2010 Promotion (�Promotion�) and by participating in the Promotion you will be deemed to have read, understood and accepted the same:-

1. Participation in KenTunes Kenya Music Week 2010 Promotion is free.

2. The KenTunes Kenya Music Week 2010 Promotion runs from 9th to 12th of December 2010 at The Kenya Music Week Expo at Sarit Centre, Nairobi.

3. Only one entry ticket is allowed per person by completing ticket with your name and email.

4. Closing date for the receipt of tickets is 8:00 pm, 12th December 2010.Ttickets received after this date will not be entered in the draw.

A Very Kenyan Christmas

For those who grew up in Kenya, Christmas is a time that brings a lot of good memories. And if you far away from Kenya it can be a difficult time as you reminiscence over the joys of spending the Christmas holidays with loved ones. Chapati, pilau, chicken, nyama choma, drinks, the Christmas carols and the social gatherings with family and friends are part of the Christmas memories that we hold dear.

If you didn�t get to travel to the motherland for the Christmas break, all is not lost as you can celebrate a Kenyan Christmas away from home and to get you in the festivities mood we have a collection of Christmas albums.

The first Christmas album is My Kenyan Christmas by the renowned Kenyan Boys Choir. The album is a celebration of Kenya�s pride and culture through Christmas carols and features some of Kenya�s most celebrated acts � Nina Ogot, Sauti Sol, Neema Ntalel, Angie Gachui, Juliani and Holy Dave.

Not to be left behind is Jimmie Gait with his 3rd album, appropriately titled Holyday. Holyday, the title track song of the album is a collaboration between Jimmie Gait and female gospel artist, Kambua. Other artists featured in the 5 track album include Rufftone and Waithira Waitara.

Beatrice Muniu�s Tumwinamie (Yesu kanobiro) 2 track album is a celebration of the birth of Christ and an invitation to all to come and bow before the new born King. Mainly in Swahili, with a bit of Luo and English; Beautiful guitars weaving through the song it�s captivating, easy to listen, mellow and full of great harmonies.

Last but not least is a children�s Christmas musical by The Recreator from their Playground series. The album titled What If Jesus Was Born In Kenya? features well known Christmas carols and includes Maasai, Luo and Taarab renditions.

The Sensational Linda Muthama

She is one of Kenya�s most promising music performers, an energetic dancer who works her crowd to get up and shake it with her. And they don�t seem to mind that her songs are in various languages as they are absorbed into the music and are swept away by the singing sensation on stage. This is the lovely, Linda Muthama.

Born on a cold July day in Tigoni, Linda, the 2nd born in a musical family of five, made her debut at the tender age of six, singing in church alongside her vocally talented sisters. Her father, a music teacher, choir instructor and music composer specialized in traditional folk tunes; songs that inspired the songstress.

And so the stage was set for Linda Muthama.

In 2001, she and her sisters formed an A cappella group called Dawn. Linda was the lead singer and they graced churches, weddings and family functions with their sensational harmonies. They were warmly welcomed by urbanites marking Linda�s beginnings as a singer.

Linda then joined music school to study piano and voice and in 2003 got accepted to Berklee College of Music in Boston. However, this was not to be as financial constraints caused her to miss out on the opportunity. However, that was not the end as she went on to study Classical Singing at the Conservatoire of Music in Kenya.

In 2004, she joined The Altimate Band and it�s here that she met her manager and producer, Walter Mongare (aka Nyambane). Her music prowess led her to become the band�s lead singer and manager.

The Altimate Band�s repertoire consists of Linda own music and cover versions, mainly Afro-Fusion, which they play at hotels, weddings, concerts and corporate gigs. The band has helped her develop and harness her skills to become an energetic stage performer and powerful vocalist.

Come 2006, Linda participated in the first ever Tusker Project Fame reality show held in Kenya. She came in 3rd, offering her a chance to share the spotlight on stage as she performed alongside respected musicians such as Eric Wainaina. This opened her doors to a US tour, performing with the likes of Jabali Afrika and the Redykyulass comedy group in the summer of 2007.

In 2009, Linda received a 1st Class Honors in Music from Kenyatta University where she studied Ethnomusicology which helped her understand the beauty and intricacy of musical rhythms from Africa.

Linda has two albums to her name. The 1st, titled Ne Muciare, was released in 2007. It means He Is Born. The album�s success cast her as a formidable artist and brought her more recognition and respect.

Imajination, released in 2010, is the title of the 2nd album. Imajination explores the depths of her soul and brings her sentiments to life.

Linda�s passion for women and children led her to dedicate Imajination to her mother as it was from her mother that she first heard the lead song Maito � which means Mother.

She gave the song life with the brilliant execution of the traditional kikuyu rhythms of Muchungwa a style popular with the kikuyu community which they performed in the 5/8 time signature with the leg tied with a rattle. Maito has now become the most popular song in the album.

The song bird is also an actress having had lead roles in musicals such as Lwanda Magere, Fiddler On The Roof and Joseph, The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat among others.
